Passport validation update

What's happening?

While there will be no changes to the comprehensive and useful information you receive in your report, this upgrade will bring you:

  • Faster results for faster turnaround times - these currently take up to two working days, they'll now take minutes
  • The same informative report but with information all in one place and in a clearer and more detailed breakdown – see the new look report here
  • Pop-up with top tips for uploading the perfect passport image
  • API improvements to include details of why a completed passport validation check is red, amber or green

How can you find out more?

For more information on all aspects of this check, including the search values, how name matching works, datasets, and the customisations available, check out our guide here.

Please note: This upgrade will only affect new orders placed from the day after the release. Any orders started prior to this date, even if not finalised, will continue to be processed in the previous format.

Why is this important?

Passport validation checks are an important tool in establishing a person’s identity. Verifile checks the code on the machine-readable zone (MRZ), as per International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standardisation, cross-check against a database of lost, stolen and compromised passports, and undertake a visual authenticity scan.

Financial institutions, landlords, and lawyers, for example, can use a passport verification check as part of their KYC checks. This is a vital tool in verifying the identity document your clients used to identify themselves.

When employing new staff, a passport validation check will help you determine a person’s identity as well as their right to work. While a passport isn’t the only method of doing this if they present a fake, doctored, lost or stolen passport, then they very likely don’t have the right to work or they might be using a fake identity.

Please note: This upgrade will only affect new orders placed after the release. Any orders started before this date, even if not finalised, will continue to be processed in the current format.

What else is being updated?

Accessibility across our websites

Our main website, candidate portal, and Verifile portal will also be upgraded to offer full accessibility and are compliant with WCAG 2.1, ADA (Section 508) and EN 301549.

This will mean that any clients or candidates with disabilities will be able to make full use of our digital services. With this upgrade, these services can be adjusted to:

  • Work with screen readers for the blind or visually impaired
  • Allow keyboard and smart navigation so those with motor disabilities can navigate the site via a keyboard
  • Respond to voice commands

Other adjustments can also be made to text size, contrast, and colour for those with certain visual impairments. Blink blocking also pauses any animations for those who may suffer from epilepsy.

This upgrade is part of Verifile’s ongoing commitment to make sure all our services are accessible for all our users.

Check notes

We’ve also made some minor upgrades to the way notes are added to all checks by our teams.

Notes on your checks will now be organised so you have a better audit trail, as well as being clearer and easier to read and digest.

Our system will also allow spellchecking before a note is added, to avoid errors causing any misunderstandings.

When is this happening?

This update will be rolled out on 15 January 2020, at 17:30 BST. This is outside of UK office hours, so disruption will be minimal. However, we appreciate your patience while we implement these upgrades, which should take around 90 minutes.

We appreciate your patience while we enhance these services, but we are sure you will agree the short wait will be well worth it.

Any questions?

Don’t forget, if you have any questions about how this update affects you, please speak to your account manager or contact our client services team on +44 (0)1234 339350.
